Today exactly 30 years ago on the 8th of the 8th in 1988 we, that is Ron Faas and Tirso Francés, started Dietwee (Dutch for Thosetwo) on a day which, according to our Chinese friends, was an extremely lucky date to have incidentally started our company on.
Aged 21 and knowing very little about these things we registered ourselves officially in order to be able to send our first client a proper invoice during our second year at HKU, Utrecht University of Applied Arts.
The cause of the name was simple: We were a pain in the ass for the local printshop, always wanting the best quality for the sharpest price. Whenever we visited them the owner of that place moaned with a smile on his face: ‘Oh God it’s those two again’.
At that time we were 21 years old and aimed to make work which would communicate more clearly and more directly than much of the graphic communication which was made at the time, and yet at the same time when relevant go deeper and ask different questions than most. We aimed to contribute our talent to businesses and organizations who in their own right aimed to use their means to somehow contribute to a better world. At that time we could never ever have imagined that we would accomplish so much and become such a big studio! Over the course of these 30 years, more than 200 people from 14 different countries have worked and done internships with us!
It makes us, at this point, humble and grateful for all that trust and appreciation which our studio has received from all those extremely talented people who we have had the privilege to work with, be it colleagues, interns, partners and of course our clients large and small, in the past, present and hopefully in the future as well.
A big thank you to everyone that has been involved in our success the past years, we couldn’t have made it this far without you! Party will follow somewhere this year for all you people, both colleagues, clients and interns, as most of you are on holiday right now so today would not have been a good time to do so.
Obviously the most special thank you is to the talented people working with us now, helping us to keep Dietwee more than relevant in 2018, and to all you clients who are giving us your trust right now. We probably don’t say it enough, as we are often too focused on the work itself, but we love you guys.
We are still, or maybe now even more than ever, aiming to use our talent to help you make this world better for everyone. Let’s make that real. Thank you. Rock on.
